Zoltán Nagy

Bass-baritone Zoltan Nagy, originally from Transylvania, is considered one of the most versatile artists of his generation. His international career began at the age of just 24 as a permanent ensemble member at the Vienna State Opera and has since developed into a successful career as a freelance singer with performances at renowned opera houses around the world – including the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the Komische Oper Berlin, the Hamburg State Opera, and the Theater an der Wien.

His recent engagements include the roles of Amonasro in Aida in a production at the Opera in the Quarry by Thaddeus Strassberger, conducted by Iván López Reynoso, Enrico in Lucia di Lammermoor, directed by Joan Anton Obiols, under the baton of Josep Caballé Domenech, Don Carlos in The Betrothal in a Monastery by Prokofiev, in a new production by Damiano Michieletto, conducted by Dmitry Matvienko, Alberich in Siegfried and Götterdämmerung, part of a new Ring cycle at the Theater Bern, directed by Ewelina Marciniak, conducted by Nicholas Carter.
His upcoming engagements include a new production of Il Trittico at the Hungarian State Opera in Cluj, in which he will perform both Gianni Schicchi and Michele; a new production of Das Rheingold in Marseille as Alberich; a debut at the Seville Opera as Don Carlos in Prokofiev's The Betrothal in a Monastery; and a new production of The Little Prince at the Theater an der Wien.
Thanks to his dark vocal timbre and extended vocal range, Zoltan Nagy moves effortlessly between bass-baritone and baritone roles.
One of his signature roles is Escamillo in Carmen, which he has sung in numerous productions worldwide, including at the Romanian and Hungarian National Operas in Bucharest and Budapest, the Nuremberg State Theater, Teatro Massimo Palermo, ABAO Bilbao, RTÉ Dublin, Teatro Grande di Brescia, Teatro Ponchielli Cremona, Teatro Sociale Como, Teatro Regio Torino, and the Shaanxi Grand Theater in Xi'an.
La Bohème is also a regular part of his repertoire: Zoltan Nagy has performed the roles of Marcello and Schaunard in over 100 performances – including at the Flemish Opera Antwerp, Ghent Opera, Leipzig Opera, Opéra de Nice, Teatro Comunale Sassari, the Budapest and Bucharest Operas, and the Royal Opera House in London.
He made his Italian debut as Dr. Falke in Johann Strauss's Die Fledermaus at the Teatro Verdi in Trieste under Gianluigi Gelmetti, followed by engagements in Carmen in Palermo and Turin, and as Trinity Moses in Weill's Rise and Fall of Mahagonny at the Teatro Regio di Parma, directed by Henning Brockhaus and conducted by Christopher Franklin.
He sang his first Alberich in Siegfried and Götterdämmerung in 2017 and 2018 at the Oviedo Opera in Spain.
He made his debut as Count Tomski in Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades at the Heidenheim Opera Festival, accompanied by the Stuttgart Philharmonic under Marcus Bosch.
Zoltan Nagy has also appeared in several international productions, both on CD and DVD.
He has performed with renowned orchestras, including the Vienna Philharmonic, the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, the Singapore Symphony, the Robert Schumann Philharmonic, and many more.
He has worked with renowned conductors such as Marco Armiliato, Fabio Luisi, Adam Fischer, Stefan Soltesz, and Gianluigi Gelmetti, among others.
Zoltan Nagy has collaborated with internationally renowned directors, including Peter Konwitschny, Stefano Poda, Calixto Bieito, Joan Anton Rechi, and Inga Levant, among others.
