Sorin Coliban was born in Bucharest and studied at the National Music Academy of his hometown. He started his career as Don Giovanni (Director: Ruggero Raimondi) at Athens’ Megaron. During following years he was invited to the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Opéra national and Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, to San Francisco, Santiago de Chile, Tel Aviv, to the Rossini Festival in Pesaro, Opéra de Monte Carlo, Bavarian State Opera Munich, Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, Stadttheater Klagenfurt, to Lucerne, Wiener Festwochen and most notably to Vienna State Opera and Volksoper.
His roles include Filippo II (Don Carlo), Fiesco (Simon Boccanegra), Procida (Les vêpres siciliennes), Raimondo (Lucia di Lammermoor), Ferrando (Il trovatore), Banquo (Macbeth), Don Giovanni and Commendatore (Don Giovanni), Capulet (Roméo et Juliette), Escamillo (Carmen), Colline (La Bohème), Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Mosè (Mosè in Egitto by Rossini), Don Magnifico (La Cenerentola), Dutchman (Der fliegende Holländer) and the main role in Salvatore Sciarrino's Macbeth.
He was successful in concert halls with works by Mendelssohn (Elias), Bach (St Matthew Passion), Verdi (Requiem), Gustav Mahler (8th Symphony) and Beethoven (9th Symphony) in Bucharest, Tel Aviv, Lyon and Dresden.
Between 2004 and 2020 he was a fix member of State Opera and Volksoper ensemble in Vienna where he incorporated numerous prestigious bass roles including Archelaos (King Kandaules), Commendatore (Don Giovanni), Bonzo (Madama Butterfly), Miller (Irrelohe), Zuniga (Carmen), Speaker and Sarastro (Die Zauberflöte), Bartolo (Le nozze di Figaro), Friedrich Engel (Der Evangelimann), Konrad Nachtigall (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg), Timur (Turandot), Eremit (Der Freischütz), Peasant (Die Kluge), Tommaso (Tiefland), Basilio (Il barbiere di Siviglia), Prince Konchak (Prince Igor), Monterone (Rigoletto), Filippo and Grand Inquisitor (Don Carlos), Fra Melitone (La forza del destino), Fasolt (Das Rheingold) und Gorianchikov (From the House of Dead).
Vienna State Opera tours brought Sorin Coliban to Hamburg's Laeiszhalle and to Muscat's Royal Opera House. He was guesting with Bregenzer Festspiele, Mozart Festival La Coruna, in Berlin, Bucharest, Lausanne and Hamburg. In summer 2013 he gave his debut with the Bayreuth Festival as Fafner in Frank Castorf's production of Das Rheingold with Kirill Petrenko conducting. The audience in St. Margarethen already knows him as Sparafucile in Rigoletto 2017.
